Act. Honor. Hope. Luncheon

Join advocates and survivors across Virginia for the Action Alliance’s annual Act. Honor. Hope. Luncheon Reception on Friday December 8th, 2023, from 11:00am-2:30pm at the Cultural Arts Center in Glen Allen.

Each year in December, the Action Alliance gathers our membership – made up of 70+ community-based sexual and domestic violence agencies (SDVAs), a statewide network of professional allies, and individual and lifetime contributors – to reflect on the past year of great organizing accomplishments, to show support for future bold visions, and to celebrate those who have been active in making the world a better place for all Virginians.

And this year is a big one! This year, we’ll gather to honor a legacy of work to advance survivor justice in Virginia by two prominent policy-leaders, while celebrating the passing of the torch to a hopeful and new generation of activists and justice-seekers. Our 2023 Hope Legacy Award recipients are:

Senator Janet Howell (Senate of Virginia, 32nd District, Fairfax County)

Having served in the Senate since 1992, the same year that Kristi VanAudenhove and Ruth Micklem became Co-Directors of Virginians Against Domestic Violence (VADV), Senator Howell has been a true pioneer for women in government and worked closely with advocates and survivors every step of the way. She is a fierce champion and disciplined leader on behalf of women, children, and families and for more than 30 years has seamlessly merged visions for a world where violence does not occur with the tangible resource and systems-based needs of those for whom it does. Her leadership as Chair of the Senate Finance Committee and as former Chair of the historic Virginia Commission on Family Violence Prevention has shaped the course of our work here in Virginia for generations to come.

Delegate Rob Bell (House of Delegates, 58th District – Albemarle County)

When Delegate Bell joined the Virginia House of Delegates in 2002, he quickly became a pivotal figure in our work as a member, and then Chair, of the House Courts of Justice Committee. It’s safe to say that there is not a piece of justice system legislation related to sexual or domestic violence that has passed in 22 years that does not have his imprint. His knowledge of the law, understanding of the system, and his willingness to listen to and work with directly impacted people has made him a central figure in both the substance and the strategy of passing good legislation that does what you want it to do.

Elizabeth Owens

(Eli)zabeth Owens (they/them) is a nonbinary art-rock artist based in Richmond, Virginia using music & video as a vehicle for brave and vulnerable self-uncovering.

As a lover of magick with a background in classical piano, voice, guitar, Celtic harp and sound design, Owens uses these instruments as tools for deep inner work that translate to sparkling arrangements and stunning live performances. Playing with the languages of folk, romance, soundscape, avant-garde and glitch, their music results in a timeless yet cuttingly fresh brand of art rock unlike anything you’ll hear today. Conceptually, their work centers around unraveling ego patterns and harmful cultural myths, allowing love and compassion to blossom amidst painful overgrowth.

For lovers of Kate Bush, Bjork, Tori Amos, Joanna Newsom, and Caroline Polacheck.
